The Hohenzollern Castle

The Hohenzollern castle can be found near Hechingen in the state of Baden-Württemburg. It is the ancestral seat of the Prussian Royal House and the Hohenzollern princes. This beautiful castle about an hour’s drive from Stuttgart and is worth the trip if you decide to go there. This castle has had its share of destruction and rebuilding throughout the centuries and you can read more about its interesting history here.

According to one of the guides, the royal families do not reside at this castle anymore, it is still used for special occasions.

Already from a distance the impressive castle can be seen high on the hill.

Signs lead you to the site of the castle. There are parking areas below the castle in a couple of locations and it costed 2 Euros (as of April 2018) to park there. If you arrive later, you may have to park at the lowest parking area. There are shuttle busses that will then take up to a higher level.

You may choose to take the pathway up to the castle. This image shows the sign that leads the way.

It does get quite steep as you go up and is a combination of a paved pathway and steps. For those in a wheel chair, this way is not recommended. When you see this view, each step is worth it. This image was made in the spring before the trees start to bloom. During the summer, you probably will not even see the castle at all.

Signs along the way show you the distance to different locations in the area. To the castle of Hohenzollern, there is still 500 meters to walk.

So near, yet so far away.

”Finally we are getting closer to the castle.

The pathway is just below the castle. Just one more bend and then the entrance appears. The price to enter is 7 Euros if you want to just see the castle grounds and 12 Euros if you want to go inside with a guided tour and see the beautiful rooms inside of the castle (well worth it). We were there on a Saturday and it was the “Royal Castle Stroll” day so there was only the price of 12 Euros, so it will vary, depending what day you are there. There were also guides around, but they were not guiding. They would answer questions if you had any. On the “Royal Castle Stroll” you could take your time at looking at the rooms and all the beautiful details.

”From above, the Swabian landscape is absolutely gorgeous. Since the trees are still bare, you can see quite intot he distance.”

This is how it looks from the entrance when you look down at the pathway. We made lots of pictures from the grounds and of the castle, but it is not allowed to publish them on this website without permission of the owners. If you are still interested about more information about the castle, you can read more information here on their official website.
