The London Eye The London Eye cannot be overlooked. This ferris wheel is 135 meters high and is the largest in Europe. It was first opened in 1999 and is a fantastic way to enjoy the city from above.
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament Probably the most famous icon of London is the Big Ben and at the Houses of Parliament. Some people believe the Big Ben to be the tower itself but actually Big Ben is the 13 ton heavy bell within the tower. Nevertheless, it is a sight worth seeing and looks even more impressive illuminated during the evening hours.
The Tower Bridge Another famous icons of London is The Tower Bridge. Magestically overlooking the Thames River, it is a favorite sight for tourists to visit while in London. There are regular exibitions at the tower and tourists can choose to stroll across the walkways at the top of the bridge as well as next to the street at the base of the tower.
Paddington Bear The most famous bear of London has to be Paddington Bear, created by Michael Bond. Who can resist that bear wearing a trench coat, rain hat and wearing the tag around his neck, “Please Look After This Bear. Thank You”. The books of his adventures are loved by young and old alike.
The London Underground or The Tube A car is not necessary in London if you are visiting as a tourist. The Underground and busses reach all corners of the city and it is easy to follow the public transportation map.
The Buckingham Palace The Buckingham Palace is located in the City of Westminster and is naturally a must see for tourists and all fans of the royals. This impressive residence of the royal family was one of the biggest highlights of our visit to London.
The Buckingham Palace Guard You can stand at the gate of Buckingham Palace to observe the guards changing their posts at regular intervals.
The Westminster Abbey Otherwise known as the Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster, this is probably the most famous church of England. Traditionally many English monarchs have been coronated and also later buried here.
St. Paul’s Cathedral The St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals of the world. The church is famous for many ceremonies including the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981 and the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elisabeth in 2002. Many famous personalities are also buried here.
The Double Decker Busses The double decker bus is famous for London and are also a great alternative as public transportation when you need to get from point “a” to point “b” in London. Because of its height, it is a great way to see the city, too.
London Taxis Just as the yellow cabs can be seen all over New York City, the black taxis dominate the streets of London.
Speaker’s Corner At the northeastern end of Hyde Park you will find the famous Speaker’s Corner. It is a traditional gathering place for people to do as the name says... to speak their minds.
Sea Life London Aquarium This attraction is located on the Thames River close to the London Eye and across from the Houses of Parliament.
Picadilly Circus The Picadilly Circus is a well known area of London. It is actually a roundabout where five major streets meet but a tourist attraction just the same. The Picadilly Circus was built in 1819. In the center of the roundabout you will find the Eros Statue and fountain, great for taking photographs.
Oxford Street The most known shopping street in the city of London.
The Traffic Signs It is of course known that the drivers in England drive on the left side of the road. As a pedestrian crossing a street, this fact gets often forgotten. Because of all of the tourists visiting, extra warnings are seen at the traffic lights to remind the visitors to be careful crossing. Also on the streets there are extra reminders to “look right”.
Harrods of London One of the largest and most exclusive department stores in the world. This store seems to have just about everything one could need.
Statues and Sculptures There seems to be a statue or sculpture on every corner in London. One could spend days just trying to find them all and learn about them.
Animal Sculptures These statues and sculptures are a dedication to all the animals that also played important roles in history.
