Praia di Camilo

The Praia di Camilo is a small beach that is divided by a small tunnel. It is an attractive beach to spend the afternoon if you can find a space to sit.

After visiting the Ponta da Piedade, we wanted to go to the Camilo Beach but first we wanted to see if we could go down to beaches that we saw from above and beyond the grottos. We followed a trail and saw that a hidden beach was down below. This was the trail we followed. To the right and down below was a hidden beach. The problem was how to get down to it.

We walked around, looked over the hill and still found no obvious trail leading to the beach.

Then we found someone who could tell us how to get down. He pointed us in the direction of this tight crevice in the landscape but warned us that we would have a hard time getting down to it because we had a beach bag and umbrella with us. It would be a tricky and difficult journey down. We observed a young couple in front of us that had nothing with them and how hard it was even for them to go down. So we decided to head back towards the car and drive to the Praia da Camilo, which was also close by.

When you get there, there is free parking and a fair amount of parking spaces available. There is also a restaurant and a kiosk to buy drinks and ice cream, too. There is also toilet facilities, as well. After a cold refreshing drink, we then headed down the stairway leading towards the beach. The view from above is already impressive.

The beach below the steps was actually smaller than expected but did have a lifeguard. When you reach the bottom, a tunnel to the left leads you to a second beach if you cannot find space at the one below. But the second beach was quite full so we returned to the first as it was the nicer of the both. We did manage to find a space and as the afternoon progressed, it became less full.

The water was high when we arrived but eventually it became ebb tide and one could explore more around the rocks.

This passageway offered a popular point for those wanting to take selfies of themselves.

The water was crystal clear and about 19 degrees celcius. For a hot day it was just perfect for swimming.

Around the corner was a cave with an open ceiling that added light to it.
