Praia dos Piratas in Portugal

This location was not only a fantastic walk along cliff walls overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, but also revealed a couple of hidden coves and grottos. One of the coves was the Praia dos Piratas. We parked at Rua de João Guita in Albufeira. It was a small road at the end of a residential area and an excellent starting point to explore this coastal area.

From above we saw this cove and knew we wanted to go down to it. But first we walked along the trails above to see the other sights.

There were several trails above to follow to reach the different vista points.

From each point, there was always something interesting to see. Here several boats full of tourists pulled up to the grottos.

Smaller boats and kayaks were also all over.

This is another beach area seen in the area. Some of the beaches seemed to only be accessable by boat as there were no obvious trails going down from the cliffs.

We approached the Praia dos Piratas and wanted to descend down to it.

It was not easy at first finding the proper trail but after asking a local resident, we finally reached it. The trail is tight but managable.

Below at the beach area you are totally enclosed by cliff walls. It is a very small and quaint beach. From looking at the color of the stone walls, the water level can get quite high in this area when the tide is high.

The water level was lower that day so it was easy to see through the tunnel and even swim through it. On the other side there are more coves and beaches to swim to. Every now and then kayakers came through the tunnel and took a break before going back out again.

Interesting rock formations were close to the stairs.
